4D Delta at the Merredin Research Station Field Day
September 26, 2014
Thanks to Greg Shea and Michelle Murfit from the Department of Agriculture and Food WA, I had the pleasure of taking part in the Merredin Research Station Field Day yesterday. This is an annual event where growers, researchers and suppliers get together to look-over and discuss the results of field trials. Field trials involve planting different varieties of grain in small lots and then subjecting them to different conditions like soil, fertiliser and moisture to see how they will perform in the region.
A couple weeks prior to the field Day, the guys from Sensorem went up and captured true-colour, near-infrared and thermal imagery of one of the trial sites and I presented the results to the group. A lot of discussion was focused on flight automation and the high level of imaging detail that drone technology brings to Agriculture. Most of the guys there had never seen anything like it and were excited to learn about how drones can be used throughout the year, not just in the growing season.
